Displayed here is the 1961 Commemorative Spade used by; The Hon. Norman Manley (then Premier), The Hon. Dr. Glendon Logan (then Minister of Housing
and Welfare), Jessie Owens (1936 US Olympic Champion), Sir. Kenneth Blackburn (then Governor of Jamaica), Herbert G. McDonald (then President of the West Indies Olympic Association). This spade was used in the ground breaking ceremony of the National Stadium on the 5th of January 1961 and it was at this stadium that the National Flag was raised on August 6th, 1962 and Independence celebrated.
